TN - Dutch Hookbills

by Jennifer Lawrence
(Chattanooga, TN)

The Hook Bill or Dutch Hookbill is currently one of the rarest official duck breeds in the world. It was brought back from the brink of extinction in the 1980's but a Dutchman who found the last 15 birds that had been out in the wild. Dave Holderread imported this breed to the U.S. in 2000.

The most striking feature of this critically endangered heritage breed of duck is, of course, its curved “Roman-nosed” bill. No other duck breed has a bill like this.

They’re a light breed, weighing only 3.5-5 pounds. They’re primarily used for eggs or exhibition. They lay 100-200 white, blue, or green eggs per year. They fly well. They’re also usually fairly good mothers and broodies. They’re easy to keep, docile, friendly, and get along well with other ducks.

I offer hatching eggs, ducklings, and later in the season will have grow-out pairs available. I can ship eggs and older ducks, but I do not ship ducklings.
